Mechanism of Action & Benefits
- Heterofermentative metabolism converts lactic acid to acetic acid and 1,2-propanediol under anaerobic conditions — the key reaction underlying its silage benefits
- Acetic acid production inhibits spoilage yeasts and molds that trigger aerobic heating and nutrient losses once silage is exposed to air
- Widely regarded as a standard silage inoculant for improving the aerobic stability of corn, forage, and other silages
- Acts more slowly than homofermentative lactic acid bacteria during the early fermentation stage, but provides lasting protection through storage and feed-out
- Reduces dry matter and nutrient losses associated with aerobic spoilage, helping preserve forage nutritional value
- Applied as a forage/silage starter culture rather than as a direct-fed gut probiotic
Recommended Dosage
Recommended minimum inclusion: 0.1–2×10⁸ CFU per kg body weight, adjusted by target species. For feed inclusion, calculate from body weight and target intake. For silage inoculation, the recommended application rate is 10⁴ CFU/g.
