• One of the dominant Bifidobacterium species in the healthy adult gut, fermenting dietary fiber and resistant starch via the "bifid shunt" pathway to generate acetate and lactate
• Bile salt hydrolase activity deconjugates bile acids, a mechanism linked to the regulation of host cholesterol and lipid metabolism
• Synthesizes B-group vitamins, including folate, that are available for use by the host and the surrounding gut microbiota
